The Riviera Maya in Mexico is located south of the Mega Tourist destination
Cancun beginning in the Municipal jurisdiction of Benito Juarez and ending
at the end of Solidaridad. The 307
Highway now completed into a grass median divided highway of between 4 and
6 lanes from Cancun Downtown to Xcaret where it again becomes a 2 lane undivided
highway until you arrive just north of the Capitol of Quintana Roo Chetumal.
Puerto Morelos
The Riviera Maya consists of many wonderful towns, destinations, and resorts
along the way beginning as you leave the Cancun International Airport and head
south. The first community located in the Riviera Maya is Puerto Morelos and
is about 15 minutes south of the Cancun Airport. This is still a small sleepy
fishing village with more beachfront homes than hotels and is quite layed back.
Many visit here for months at a time to escape the cold of the northern states
of the US, Canada, and Europe.
Playa Del Carmen
The Next town along the way although you will be passing many resorts on the
highway is Playa Del Carmen which just not so long ago was not such the bustling
tourist destination that she is today. Walking the 5th Avenue of Playa Del
Carmen you can get the air of the international tourism that flocks here from
Italy, Germany, Argentina as well as United States and Canada. Restaurants
and shops from the very simple to the very exquisit and expensive dot the avenue.
Shopping for that Rolex? Playa Del Carmen has it at UltraFemme and Ultrajewels
located on the 5th Ave. You say you want a fine night out dining? The Glass
Bar offers excellent Italian Cuisine and an incredible selection of wines.
Playacar
The next town note worthy after Playa Del Carmen is Playacar which is a Golf
Course and All Inclusive hotel community just outside of the city of Playa
Del Carmen to the South and just passed the Playacar continuing to the south
is Xcaret. Now it is also time to mention that in Playa Del Carmen you can
buy groceries at those American Style Grocery Stores, for example there is
Chedraui on the Northbound Side of Playa Del Carmen and Soriana on the Southbound
Side. Soriana offers many of the brand names you might be used to in the US
and as does Sam's Club (just across the street) imported cuts of beef.
Puerto Aventuras
Continuing south on the 307 after Xcaret you will pass Calica which is a port
where some Cruise ships disembark passengers for shopping and tours to places
like Xcaret, Xel Ha, and Tulum. You then come rapidly upon Puerto Aventuras
just 10 or 15 minutes past Xcaret, it is on the left side of the highway and
has controlled entry. Don't worry, you are all welcome whether you are staying
in Puerto Aventuras, renting a home or condo, or just want to visit for the
day. There are many activities inside Puerto Aventuras from our Famous Deep
Sea Fishing to Scuba Diving and Parasailing to Swimming with the dolphins.
Even if you are just coming in to walk around, have a cold drink, and do a
little shopping you are always welcome.
Tulum
South of Puerto Aventuras you will pass residential areas of Akumal, Soliman
Bay, and Tankah before arriving in the ancient mayan community of Tulum. Yes,
Mayan Kings vacationed here long before the Mexican Government knew the jewel
in the Caribbean they had and started to develop just over 30 years ago Cancun.
Of course the Mayan Riviera, Playa Del Carmen, and Puerto Aventuras are much
newer.
